From greg at shaffertech.com Sun Sep 5 08:06:05 2010 From: greg at shaffertech.com (Greg Shaffer) Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2010 11:06:05 -0400 Subject: [DMTU-News] Steam cleanup 9/11 Message-ID: Hello - Aston Township has removed two dams on Chester Creek, including one that was 12' high. As you might imagine, that dam had a relatively large impoundment behind it and now that the water level has gone down, a lot of trash has been exposed. The township has asked if TU and the CRC could assist with removing debris. If we can get it out of the stream bed, township crews will haul it away The cleanup will be in area of ~500 feet of stream located along Mt Road between 452 and Neumann University. Mt Road is the intersection where PJ's Sports Bar is located. We are tentatively planning on doing this Saturday 9/11 at 9am, probably for about 2 hours. Please email me if you are willing to assist so we can get some idea of how many volunteers we might have. I should have details (e.g. where to meet) Tuesday at our meeting, but I will also follow up via email. FYI, I am told the next dam on Chester Creek is the one at King's Mill and that a fish ladder may be installed there. Greg -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Greg ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: CRC Watersheds Date: Tue, Sep 7, 2010 at 1:26 PM Subject: Can you help with Post West Branch Chester Creek Dam Removal Cleanup this Sat monring Sept 11? To: CRC Watersheds Cc: Gary Snyder-work , greg at shaffertech.com, crcleslie at nni.com Dear CRC Streams Cleanup "Heros" The large 12 foot high "Dam no. 3" on the West Branch of Chester Creek finally came down two weeks ago after four years of planning effort on the part of Aston Township and their engineers Stantec. Unfortunately, it exposed at least 15 tires and some other large trash items immediately upstream, and residents are quite upset. The Township requested CRC and Trout Unlimited's help in organizing a cleanup, which we are holding this Saturday Sept 11, from 9 AM to 11 AM. We are contacting you with the hope that you might be able to help us in this important public service. We are meeting in Lewis H Fisher Memorial Park parking lot which is close to the creek and a trail which goes down to and along the creek. I have attached a map of the site which is located along Mount Road, off of 452 south in Aston. I would wear waders or knee boots, although the water is quite shallow, and at least bring a shovel, and if you have one, a maddock or tire iron, iron chain,. If any of you has access to a four wheel ATV to chain the tire(s) to to drag out, that would be great as well. I have a hand truck that might help. I will bring bags for any small items, but we will be concentrating on the bigger stuff this time. We will bring the trash up to the parking lot and the township will remove it. Here are the directions from Media for any of you that can make it. Mike Fusco, can you forward to your Friends of Chester Creek to see if any of them can help. Greg Shaffer has already recruited 4 TU volunteers. >From Media, take Baltimore Pike west to Route 452 and make a left. Go a few miles, and turn right onto Mount Road. I believe it is next right turn after Lenni Road, and you will have just crossed over Chester Creek. Stay on Mount Road, ( you will be following the the west branch to your right.) You will pass Poor Park, then the small old industrial complex where Dam No. 3 was removed. After that you will see the Eagle Pump Station parking lot on the right, then a short distance after that the Lewis H. Fisher Memorial Park parking lot on your right. We will meet in the parking lot by 9 AM. If you arrive later, please sign in and proceed down to the creek. Also, our biggest planting of the year is Saturday October 2nd at 8:30 AM at Ridley Creek State Park at our restoration site below the Barren Road bridge, where we will be planting 110 trees with TU and KC volunteers. Please let me know if you would be able to help the cleanup, and/or the Sat Oct 2nd the tree planting . My cell phone that morning or anytime is 610-470-6960. Looking forward to seeing some of you there. The weather should be great! Thank you very much. I look forward to seeing some of you on the stream. A lot of big, bulky junk was removed from a pleasant park/trail area. Anne Murphy noted that the trash included 28 tires, 3 drums, a rowboat, a cement trash can, washing machine parts, and a kitchen sink. A lot of what was removed had been at least half buried in silt and/or sand, but everyone pitched in to get it out. CRC volunteer Michael Mogavero saved us all a lot of work by bringing his ATV and trailer to carry the debris from the creek bank to the road. In total there were 13 volunteers - one from Aston Township, five from CRC, and seven of our members - myself, Eric Camilli, Ed Collier, Bob Hartje, Shane Campbell, Dave Wharton, and Charlie Flannegan. I really appreciate that you were all able to come out and help and I apologize for ducking out early (I'll do anything to get out of doing manual labor). For those who were not there - I am kidding. I had an accident midway through and ended up getting 8 staples in my forearm. My foot got stuck while I was hauling a barrel out of the creek and my arm caught a sharp edge as I fell. It wasn't great, but I was lucky that it didn't cause any functional damage. It is almost healed now though, so I just need to come up with a better story to tell about the scar.
